Cabin Counsellors - For Boys & Girls 7-15

Camp Walden strives to create a feeling of community and a sense of belonging. That feeling often starts with the cabin group, 8-12 children and at least three staff living together in a single cabin. This will become your family throughout the summer. Your responsibilities will be to provide a safe and caring environment and to create and facilitate relationships with everyone in the cabin. Cabin Counsellors spend their days with the cabin eating meals as a group, going to scheduled periods together and ending with putting your campers to bed at night. You are the camper's main source of support ensuring that they are well-fed, safe, and healthy and enjoying themselves. As a Counsellor, you will have a co-counsellor and will work under the direction of a Unit Head.

General Specialist

General Specialists work in their area and teach campers the different programs that we offer at camp. Each day you will work with a different group of campers, they attend the Specialty Area with their cabin group. General Specialists will work under the direction of a Specialty Head. Together they are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the specialty, skill development, teaching and programming. You should have a respectable practical and theoretical background in the area that you wish to instruct. See below for more detail about our different Specialties and other necessary qualifications.

Kitchen Staff

There are between 400 - 700 people in camp at any one time. They all eat at once and sometimes up to 6 times a day. As a kitchen staff you will be responsible for the preparation, cooking, serving and cleaning of food. You will also be responsible for keeping your space clean and tidy including setting tables, cleaning the kitchen area, washing pots and dishes. There are up to 20 staff working in the kitchen. You must be able to share responsibilities, work well in groups and be polite and courteous. Working in Walden's kitchen requires you to be ready for active physical labor, you will also work five days a week (between eight and twelve hours a day) with two days off (they may or may not be consecutive, they may be assigned to you). Experience in a restaurant or any commercial food outlet is an asset; but we can train inexperienced people to work in Walden's kitchen. To work in Waldens kitchen you must be ready to get dirty.

Secretarial and Office

Secretarial and Office staff will spend full days in the office being responsible for work within the office including but not limited to typing, filing, handling keys, money and photocopying. Probably the most important part of this role is corresponding with campers, staff and parents. You must be patient, friendly and willing to learn and accept feedback about these transactions. Computer skills and an ability to use Microsoft programs is a must. You will work closely with other office staff, as well as the camps Leadership. Office jobs start at the beginning of June.

Nursing

RNs, RPNs, and New Graduate Nurses who want to help children make happy childhood memories that last forever and be challenged and gain excellent pediatric experiences. As a camp nurse you will work alongside other professionals using a team approach to healthcare, utilize your nursing knowledge while at the same time providing campers and staff with a fun and healthy approach to camp life. Working with so many young people will allow you the opportunity to provide health education, promotion of healthy living, provision of first aid, emergency care, medication distribution and care for campers who are feeling unwell or homesick. By working at Camp Walden you will enhance their skills in areas such as: general assessments, public relations, ethics, emergency response, risk management, communicable disease, psychosocial, critical thinking and problem solving skills, experience an outdoor, fun filled, challenging camp experience in either a day or residential camp, located in a setting that is beautiful and picturesque. By working as a member of a team you will increase their self esteem and self confidence, working both independently. Camp Walden is looking for a dynamic nursing team to work alongside the camp staff and camp doctor.

Unit Heads

Unit Heads are responsible for supervising counsellors, staff and campers in cabin groups. You will be responsible for organizing programming for your unit, supervising and evaluating your staff and ensuring that all of your campers are enjoying themselves in a safe and caring environment. You will work under the direction of a Camper Tracker and the Head Counsellor. A Unit Head requires strong organizational, planning.

Head Specialist

Head Specialists work in their area and teach campers the different programs that we offer at camp. Each day you will work with a different group of campers, they attend the Specialty Area with their cabin group. Head Specialists organize programming for their specialty and supervise and evaluate their staff. Along with their staff, they are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the specialty, skill development, teaching and programming. You should have a respectable practical and theoretical background in the area that you wish to instruct. You will work under the direct supervision of a Program or Waterfront Director.

Countdown to 2011...

There were very few things left behind at camp and at the pick-up locations. The summer ended with the same passion and excitement that it started with. Although campers were looking forward to seeing their parents, there were lots of tears shed on the last night …more
