General Specialists

General Specialists work in different activity areas, teaching campers the programs we offer at camp. Each day you will instruct different groups of campers attending your Specialty Area with their cabin group. General Specialists live in cabins with campers. Each cabin group is made up of 8-12 children, at least 2-3 Counsellors and 1-3 General Specialists, for a total of 3-6 staff per cabin.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of a Specialty Head, General Specialists are responsible for the day-to-day operations of their specialty, encompassing skills development, teaching and programming. You require a solid practical and theoretical background in the area that you wish to instruct.

Arts

Walden’s extensive Creative Arts program requires patient, committed and creative staff to inspire campers in their own projects. This program includes Arts & Crafts, Jewelery, and Ceramics. We are looking for staff who have experience in any or all three of theses areas!

Each summer, campers and staff produce two Video Shows showcasing Walden’s amazing activities and our day to day life in creative ways using digital media. Experience with video cameras and editing equipment is preferred. Any additional skills in tech support is a bonus!

Camp photographers take daily photos of campers and staff and coordinate social media posts. We also post 50-200 photos on a photo sharing site that parents have password protected access to. Camp photographers also coordinate a cabin photo for every cabin each session.

We are looking for staff who are passionate and knowledgeable about music! Music staff have the freedom to create fun music related programs for campers of all ages! With an array of small instruments, cabins play music games, make music videos, write songs, and much more at this activity! Music staff also assist in producing the many music focused camp wide programs, including Waldenstock, Acoustic Shows, and Talent Shows!

Outdoor Adventure

In this area we are looking for staff with knowledge of the outdoors, overnight camping, orienteering, hiking and campfire cooking experience. Campcraft staff are also responsible for leading one-night overnights for our youngest campers throughout the summer.

We are looking for staff who are passionate about cooking, baking, and gardening. Food Chain staff work together to care for the Walden Garden and grow various fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Food chain staff guide campers through the gardening process and use harvested produce to then create delicious dishes in the kitchen!

Experienced canoers lead campers in overnight camping excursions, instructing them in pitching tents, cooking with campfire and appreciating the beauty of the outdoors. Staff with Wilderness First Aid experience are preferred.

Sports

Adventure Sports includes an exciting ensemble of Archery, Mountain Biking, and Low Ropes. We are looking for staff who are passionate and skilled in these outdoor activities.

We are looking for staff who are passionate about climbing and safety to instruct campers on our climbing wall and zip-line. Applicants with ACCT approved training are preferred.

Focusing on recreational and team sports, we require enthusiastic instructors, ready to help kids at any skill level. Applicants with Coaching Level 1 certification are preferred.

In this area we are looking for staff who are passionate about fitness and teaching children the importance of living an active lifestyle. Fitness staff should be able to create active programming for children of all ages. The fitness specially also includes activities such as dance, yoga, and aerobics.

Water Sports

We are looking for experienced and safety-conscious instructors. Previous experience working on a waterfront or with ORCA or equivalent training is preferred.

Experienced and safety-conscious instructors are required to teach children at all levels. Applicants with experience working on a waterfront or with previous OSA or equivalent training will be preferred.

Swim staff are those that have their NL and Instructors certification. You will be instructing campers of all levels on how to swim and helping them to achieve their swim badges.

Required Certification

  • Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard
  • Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor
  • Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor

Active throughout the summer.

Experienced and safety-conscious instructors are required. Staff that have experience working on a waterfront will be preferred.

A Pleasurecraft Operators Card is mandatory.
